Summary; Davin’s Tips.

Here are my tips on eye rejuvenation

  • Skin care products are best used as prevention
  • Key ingredients include retinol, vitamin C, caffeine & peptides
  • Wrinkles are best treated with anti-wrinkle, fillers, lasers & radiofrequency devices
  • Dark circles can be treated with skincare products, fillers, pico lasers & skin tightening
  • Microneedling, whilst useful as a skin directed procedure, is usually underwhelming in the eye area

How to approach eye rejuvenation?

There are several ways to rejuvenate the eye area, including both non-surgical and surgical options. Some non-surgical options include:

  1. Topical skincare: Using products such as eye creams, serums, and gels that contain ingredients such as retinol, hyaluronic acid, and antioxidants can help to hydrate, firm, and brighten the skin around the eyes.
  2. Microdermabrasion: This is a non-invasive procedure that uses a device to remove the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing brighter and smoother skin.
  3. Laser resufacing: Is infinitely more effective than microdermabrasion. We employ over 40 different types of lasers to rejuvenate the eye area.
  4. Chemical peels: A chemical peel can be used to remove dead skin cells, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and brighten the skin.
  5. RF Microneedling: This procedure uses tiny needles to create tiny punctures in the skin, which stimulates collagen production, and can help to firm and smooth the skin around the eyes.
  6. Anti-wrinkle or filler injection: Anti-wrinkle and dermal fillers can be used to reduce wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes.
  7. RF treatment: RF treatment uses heat energy to stimulate collagen production and can be used to tighten and firm the skin around the eyes.
  8. Surgical procedures: Surgical options for rejuvenating the eye area include blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and laser resurfacing.

It’s important to note that the best way to rejuvenate the eye area is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, get enough sleep, limit sun exposure, and manage stress. Additionally, it’s important to use skincare products that are formulated specifically for the delicate skin around the eyes, and to follow a consistent skincare routine.

What to look for in an eye cream?

When looking for an eye cream, there are several key ingredients and features to look for to ensure that the product will be effective and safe for use around the delicate skin of the eyes:

  • Moisturising ingredients: Look for eye creams that contain moisturising ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or shea butter, which can help to hydrate and plump the skin around the eyes.
  • Anti-aging ingredients: Look for ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C, or peptides, which can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.
  • Sunscreen: Eye creams that contain sunscreen can help to protect the delicate skin around the eyes from damage caused by UV rays.
  • Lightweight and non-greasy: Eye creams should be lightweight and non-greasy, as heavy or oily creams can cause irritation and may not absorb well into the skin.
  • Gentle and non-irritating: Avoid any eye cream that contains harsh chemicals or fragrances, as these can be irritating to the eyes.
  • Dermatologist-recommended: it’s always a good idea to look for eye creams that have been recommended by dermatologists or have been clinically tested.

Ingredients such as retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids, and vitamin C are sensitive to light, so it’s recommended to choose an eye cream that comes in an opaque or airtight container, to avoid degradation of the ingredients.

Let’s focus on retinol

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, and it is commonly found in skincare products, including those formulated for the eye area. Retinol can help to improve the appearance and health of the skin around the eyes in several ways:

  • Anti-aging: Retinol can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production and increasing cell turnover.
  • Brightening: Retinol can help to brighten the skin around the eyes, by reducing the appearance of dark circles and pigmentation.
  • Improving texture: Retinol can help to improve the texture of the skin around the eyes, by increasing cell turnover and exfoliating the skin.
  • Acne treatment: Retinol can also help to reduce the appearance of blemishes and acne by unclogging pores and decreasing sebum production.

While retinol can be effective, it can also cause irritation and dryness, especially when used in high concentrations or if your skin is sensitive. It’s recommended to start with a low concentration and see how your skin reacts. Retinol can increase sensitivity to the sun, so it’s important to use sunscreen and avoid sun exposure while using products containing retinol, especially in the eye area.

How to start a skincare routine focused on the eye area?

Starting a skincare routine for the eye area is a great way to keep the skin around your eyes looking youthful and refreshed. Here are some tips for starting a skincare routine for the eye area:

  1. Cleanse: Start by cleansing your face every morning and night. Use a gentle, oil-free cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type. Be sure to avoid harsh scrubs, as they can irritate the delicate skin around the eyes.
  2. Tone: After cleansing, use a toner to help remove any remaining dirt, oil or makeup. A toner can also help to restore the skin’s pH balance and prepare the skin for moisturiser.
  3. Moisturise: Use a light-weight, oil-free moisturiser to hydrate the skin around the eyes. Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin that can help to hydrate the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  4. Apply eye cream: Use a specialized eye cream to target specific issues such as dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles. Apply a small amount of eye cream to the eye area, gently patting it into the skin.
  5. Sun protection: Always use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect the delicate skin around your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.
  6. Be gentle: The skin around your eyes is delicate and sensitive, so be sure to use gentle, circular motions when applying products. Avoid rubbing or pulling the skin, as this can cause irritation and wrinkles.
  7. Consult with a dermatologist: If you have specific skin concerns around the eye area, it may be helpful to consult with a dermatologist. They can recommend products and treatments that are appropriate for your skin type and condition.

Results may vary depending on the individual, and it may take several weeks or months to see improvement. Additionally, it’s important to stick to a consistent routine and avoid skipping steps, and to adjust the routine as needed based on your skin’s changing needs.

Eye Filler Brisbane Cutis

What can dermal fillers do for the eye area?

Dermal fillers are a type of cosmetic treatment that can be used to add volume and smooth out wrinkles and lines in the eye area. They work by injecting a gel-like substance, usually made of hyaluronic acid, into the skin to plump up wrinkles and lines and to add volume to hollow or sunken areas.

  • Tear Trough: Dermal fillers can be used to fill in the tear trough, which is the area under the eyes that can appear sunken or hollow. This can help to reduce the appearance of dark circles and create a more youthful look.
  • Cheek augmentation: Dermal fillers can also be used to add volume to the cheeks, which can help to lift sagging skin in the eye area, and create a more youthful and refreshed look.
  • Eyebrow lift: Dermal fillers can also be used to lift the eyebrows, which can help to open up the eyes, and create a more youthful and refreshed look.
  • Upper eyelid: Dermal fillers can also be used to add volume to the upper eyelid, which can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and create a more youthful and refreshed look.

Dermal fillers typically last for 6-24 months depending on the type of filler and area treated.

How does anti-wrinkle rejuvenate the eye area?

Anti-wrinkle is a type of cosmetic treatment that uses a form of botulinum toxin, which is a protein that temporarily paralyses the muscles in the treated area. Anti-wrinkle is most commonly used to smooth out wrinkles and lines on the face, including those around the eyes.

  • Crows feet: Anti-wrinkle can be used to smooth out wrinkles and lines around the eyes, also known as crows feet. By injecting small amounts of anti-wrinkle into the muscles around the eyes, it can prevent the muscle from contracting and therefore, reducing wrinkles and lines around the eyes.
  • Brow lift: Anti-wrinkle can also be used to lift the eyebrows, which can help to open up the eyes and create a more youthful and refreshed look.
  • Upper eyelid: Anti-wrinkle can also be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the upper eyelid, which can help to create a more youthful and refreshed look.

The effects of anti-wrinkle typically last for 3-4 months and the procedure should be repeated as needed.

What types of lasers do we use to rejuvenate the eye area?

Lasers can be used to rejuvenate the skin on the eyelids. There are several types of laser treatments that can be used to improve the appearance of the skin on the eyelids, including:

  • Fractional laser resurfacing: This type of laser treatment uses a beam of light to penetrate the skin, which can help to stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the eyelids.
  • CO2 laser resurfacing: This type of laser treatment uses a beam of light to remove damaged skin cells and stimulate the production of new collagen, which can improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots on the eyelids.
  • Q-switched laser: This type of laser treatment uses a high-intensity light to target and break down pigmentation, which can help to reduce the appearance of dark circles and age spots on the eyelids.
  • Non-ablative laser: This type of laser treatment uses a beam of light that penetrates the skin to stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture and elasticity.

The number of sessions required ranges from 1 to 3, depending on the clinical findings & your end goals. I often combine lasers with injectables including dermal fillers & anti-wrinkle.

When do I use radiofrequency to treat the eye area?

Radiofrequency (RF) treatment is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure that can be used to improve the appearance of the skin around the eye area. RF treatment uses a device that delivers energy to the skin in the form of heat, which can help to tighten and firm the skin, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

RF treatment works by heating the deeper layers of the skin, which stimulates collagen production and helps to improve skin elasticity. The heat energy also helps to tighten and firm the skin, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

The procedure is typically done in a series of treatments, typically one to two weeks apart, and the results can be seen gradually over the course of several weeks. It can be used to treat under eye bags, wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes, and sagging skin around the eyes.

The procedure is considered safe and well-tolerated by most patients. It is a non-invasive procedure that can be done in-office and usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. We have several RF devices available at Cutis, including Pelleve, Tempsure, NuEra, Genius RFM, eMatrix / e2, & Morpheus8.

It’s important to note that while RF treatment can be used to improve the appearance of the skin around the eyes, it may not be suitable for everyone, and it may not provide the same results as a surgical procedure. It’s a good idea to consult with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to determine if RF treatment is the best course of treatment for your specific skin concerns and to ensure that you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Is microneedling an effective treatment for eye rejuvenation?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that involves using fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin. This can stimulate the body’s natural healing process and promote the production of collagen, which can help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area.

Microneedling can be used to treat a variety of skin concerns around the eye area, such as:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles: By promoting collagen production, microneedling can help to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.
  • Dark circles: Microneedling can also help to improve the appearance of dark circles by stimulating blood flow and increasing the production of collagen.
  • Puffy eyes: Microneedling can also help to reduce puffiness around the eyes by stimulating lymphatic drainage.
  • Tired-looking eyes: Microneedling can also help to refresh the appearance of tired-looking eyes by stimulating collagen production and improving skin tone and texture.

Some people may experience redness, swelling, or mild discomfort for a few days post-treatment. Though I perform microneedling for other concerns (hair loss, scars), in the context of eye rejuvenation, it is way, way down my list. Why? Other treatments such as lasers are much better, with less side effects, quicker recovery & infinitely better results. I think microneedling with PRP is an overrated procedure in the context of eye rejuvenation.

Do threads work well around the eye area?

Threads, also known as sutures or PDO (polydioxanone) threads, are a non-surgical treatment option that can be used to lift and tighten the skin around the eye area. The threads are made from a material that is similar to dissolvable sutures used in surgery. They are inserted into the skin using a thin needle and then strategically placed to lift and tighten the skin.

Threads work by stimulating collagen production in the skin, which helps to improve skin elasticity and firmness. They can also be used to lift and reposition sagging skin around the eyes, which can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Thread lift treatment is considered safe and it is generally well-tolerated by most patients. It is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done in-office and requires only local anaesthesia. The procedure usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.

While thread lift can be used to lift and tighten the skin around the eyes, it may not be suitable for everyone, and it may not provide the same results as a surgical or laser procedure. In summary, though I do perform threads as part of a combination treatment, the results are generally good, albeit a very short duration of action- typically 2-3 months & not the advertised 6-12 months.

What skin care products should I use to treat dark circles?

Dark circles under the eyes can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, allergies, lack of sleep, and ageing. While makeup can be used to temporarily conceal dark circles, using the right skincare products can help to improve the appearance of dark circles over time. Here are some skincare products that may be helpful in treating dark circles:

  • Eye cream: Look for an eye cream that contains ingredients that help to brighten the skin, such as vitamin C, kojic acid, and niacinamide. Eye creams that contain caffeine can also help to reduce puffiness.
  • Retinol: Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, which can help to stimulate collagen production, increase cell turnover, and brighten the skin. It can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Sunscreen: Sunscreen can help to protect the delicate skin around the eyes from sun damage, which can contribute to the appearance of dark circles.
  • Topical Vitamin K: Vitamin K is known to help with blood clotting and can help to reduce the appearance of dark circles caused by broken blood vessels.
  • Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the eyes, can help to reduce puffiness and inflammation, which can make dark circles less noticeable.

It may take time to see results, as well as to avoid over-exfoliating or using harsh products that can cause irritation around the delicate eye area.

What other procedures do I employ to treat lax eyelids?

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure that is used to improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure can be used to remove excess skin and fat, and to reposition or remove sagging or droopy skin, which can make the eyes look more youthful and refreshed.

Upper blepharoplasty involves making an incision in the upper eyelid crease, through which excess skin and fat can be removed. This procedure can be used to correct drooping or sagging upper eyelids, which can make the eyes look tired or aged.

Lower blepharoplasty involves making an incision in the lower eyelid, through which excess skin and fat can be removed. This procedure can be used to correct puffiness or bags under the eyes, and to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines in the lower eyelid area.

The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia or under IV sedation, and usually takes 1-3 hours depending on the extent of the procedure. Recovery time can vary, but most people can return to work within 1-2 weeks.

Blepharoplasty carries some risks, including bleeding, infection, and scarring. Consult a specialist plastic, eye or dermatological surgeon to determine if blepharoplasty is the best course of treatment for your specific skin concerns and to ensure that you are a good candidate for the procedure.
