What causes crow’s feet & wrinkles?

As we mature, we lose collagen, which is the scaffolding for skin. Combined with repetitive movements of facial muscles & the natural aging process, wrinkles & lines form around the eyes.

A simple classification of wrinkles is –

        • Dynamic wrinkling; contributed with movement. Think of a crease when folding paper.
        • Static wrinkling; wrinkles at rest due to UV, environment factors & age-related breakdown of collagen & hyaluronic acid.

At what age should you get treatment?

The average age is in the early 30s, however treatment in the early stages of wrinkling can prevent crow’s feet. There are two streams of thought-

        1. Wrinkle prevention: small treatments, done at timely intervals.
        2. Early wrinkle treatment: larger treatments done at more frequent intervals.

Your dermatologist or nurse will have their own take on things, be guided by them.

        What does treatment entail?

The simplest, most cost-effective solution is muscle relaxants into the outer corners of the eyes.

It takes 5-10 days before the muscle relaxes, in turn diminishing the look of crow’s feet. This whole process takes less than 2 minutes to complete. It’s that simple.

What is the recovery process like?

This non-invasive procedure has no downtime. The skin around eyes may be slightly red for a few hours but subsides within a few hours after the treatment. If required, you can wear makeup.

When will I notice the results?

Within 12 days, your crow’s feet will have become less noticeable as the muscles responsible for wrinkles are less dynamic. This effect will continue to reduce the depth of wrinkles in the next few months.

The effects last 3-4 months. As the treatment wears off, the wrinkles will gradually return. Many clients undergo treatments at regular intervals to maintain their results, or in some cases opt for long-acting treatments such as laser resurfacing.

        Does it hurt?

It’s like an ant bite (normal household ant, not a green or bull ant), it’s over in a second or two.

At what age do crow’s feet - eye wrinkles appear?

The onset of wrinkles depends on your genetic make-up as well as extrinsic factors such as smoking & sun exposure. For most people it’s in the early 30s, a time when your skin starts to lose more collagen, elastin & hyaluronic acid.

Coupled with repetitive contractions of muscles, the periorbital area is one of the first places that fine lines start to form.

Basic treatment, but more complex than it looks. Executed well, muscle relaxants in this area reduces dynamic wrinkles, but still preserves natural animation & expression.

Will this treatment be effective on all ages?

No. If you have too much laxity, certain wrinkle treatments can make things worse. As a guide, if you are over 65, you may require a helping hand with other treatments such as lasers, chemical peels, volume, or surgical procedures.

What are the possible side effects?

After a crow’s feet treatment, you will have tiny 1 mm red bumps (3 to 4 in total, each side). This will subside within 20-40 minutes.

Bruising may occur, if so, it resolves in 2-4 days. Injections in this area are side effect free.

How do we prevent crow’s feet & wrinkles?

Crow’s feet appear as part of the natural ageing process however you can prevent wrinkles in three ways.

        1. Skin care is the foundation of wrinkle prevention. Vitamin A including retinol can prevent fine lines & wrinkles. Antioxidants including ascorbic & ferulic acid reduce collagen breakdown.
        2. Lasers & energy devices can erase deep lines & crow’s feet. A simple preventive laser is Clear + Brilliant, or Tixel.
        3. Preventive wrinkle treatments around the eyes. We can relax the muscles that cause crow’s feet to develop. This prevents wrinkles from becoming deeper & more noticeable.

Can we treat wrinkles without injections?

Yes, we can. Dermatologists can also reduce wrinkles by auto-stimulation of your own collagen. This works best for static wrinkles, or wrinkles at rest. We do this with-

Laser resurfacing: using hybrid & CO2 lasers we can remove even the most stubborn wrinkles. The best combination depends on the depth of wrinkles & your skin type.

Chemical peels: can address superficial wrinkles & deep wrinkles. Glycolic, lactic & Jessner TCA are all excellent peels.

Tixel: is a safe & effective treatment for mild to moderate crow’s feet & eye wrinkles. It uses nono-laser technology to stimulate collagen in the eye area.

What is the fastest way to treat wrinkles?

For simple wrinkles like crow’s feet, our dedicated team can markedly reduce wrinkles with zero downtime. Results can be seen as early as one week. The injection points typically take 10 – 20 seconds per side. That’s it.

If you would like your own immune system to stimulate collagen, this can take up to 3 months for maximal effectiveness.

Can chemical peels treat eye wrinkles?

Chemical peels are great for treating static wrinkles of any depth.

For shallow eye wrinkles, glycolic acid or lactic acid peels can do wonders. For super deep etched wrinkles, our dermatologists employ Jessner TCA peels. This has a downtime of over 7 days.

Peels do not stop muscle movements; hence patients are advised that simple anti-wrinkle can treat & prevent dynamic wrinkles.

Can crow’s feet be treated in men?

Yes, but the style of treatment is very different. Though in theory more units are required as men’s crow’s feet are deeper due to stronger muscles, the aim of natural aesthetics is to reduce wrinkling & animation & not totally eliminate muscle action.

Each clinician has their own take on natural male aesthetics & hence you will be guided by them.
