Lip Fillers

The lips are a central feature of the face. Natural & attractive-looking lips have much to do with the definition, volume & the proportions of the upper and lower lips. A key characteristic of beautiful lips is that they have a harmonious appearance and blend well with the rest of your face. They should not be the overriding feature. You can book a FREE* nurse consultation at our Brisbane clinics who work with board-certified dermatologist Dr Davin Lim. *T & C applies.

Key Points

  • For a natural outcome, lips should not be the standout feature of the face

        FAQs

How can lips benefit from dermal fillers?

Some people are born with thin lips, whilst others have lips that have begun to age. Lips lose volume & definition, thinning over time.

Lip augmentation with dermal fillers adds shape, definition, & volume to the lips. Certain advanced hyaluronic acid fillers are designed specifically for lip augmentation. Together with the skills of an experienced injector, fillers can create smooth, natural-looking results.

What defines a balanced & natural lip filler outcome?

Lip fillers must be age appropriate & blend in with the rest of the face. Though central to rejuvenation, the lips should NOT be the standout feature. For this reason, it is sometimes recommended that we combine lip augmentation with other treatments, such as fillers in other areas, or consider other procedures to reduce wrinkles around the mouth, jowls & jawline areas.

        Why is symmetry important?

Facial asymmetry is common & acceptable, but lip asymmetry requires correction. If your lip structure is uneven, it can throw off the aesthetic harmony of your entire face as lips are the central point.

Asymmetry is easily adjusted with dermal fillers. If you have been struggling with an unbalanced mouth – whether it is from birth, due to an accident, or filler from another clinic our specialist injectors can help.

How long does the procedure take?

Lip fillers can be performed in approximately 10 to 15 minutes & is literally a lunchtime procedure. Patients experience only mild swelling & bruising after treatment, which subsides within a few days to a week.

When will I see the results from lip fillers?

Immediately after the procedure. For the first few days (up to 12-14), your lips will look 10-25% bigger than the end result. It’s due to swelling. They look best at the two-week mark.

If it’s your first time, we always recommend under correction, rather than over correction. It’s much easier to place more filler, than to dissolve it (& more economical in the long run).

        How long do fillers last?

With hyaluronic acid injectables, the results last 6 to 12 months. The reason is that lips move more than any other facial component, & this causes the body to break down the filler more rapidly compared to other areas. Your lips will not look strange or deflated during this process. They will simply resume their previous shape & volume.

What happens if I don’t like my lip filler?

You would be one of only a handful of patients over 15 years, but seriously, we can inject an enzyme known as hyaluronidase into your lips. This speeds up the rate at which the filler breaks down. The procedure takes a few minutes, and the results are immediate.

Remember that it does take a week or so after your lip filler to see the best results. In rare cases, swelling can take 2 weeks before settling down.

What happens if I don’t like my lip filler from another clinic?

Our injectors can use Hyalase to break down the filler, providing they used hyaluronic acid.

There are many causes of dermal filler lumps on the lip, including wrong product, too much product, incorrect placement & other factors.

How do specialists approach mature lips?

Rejuvenating mature lips is much more complex than rejuvenating younger lips.  We consider –

        • The lip itself, namely volume, structure & proportions of upper & lower lip
        • The surrounding soft tissue support- marionette lines, jowls, nasolabial folds
        • The underlying hard tissue support- teeth, jawline & bone
        • The distance between the upper lip & nasal spine
        • Skin quality of the perioral area, namely sun damage & wrinkles

Natural rejuvenation is not just filler in the lips, it involves improving all aspects as above. We employ fillers, lasers, deep peels, & surgery to achieve balanced & harmonious results.

Complex lip rejuvenation is performed by our procedural dermatologists.

Can we use fat transfer instead of dermal fillers?

Our dermatologists are trained to perform fat transfer; however it is not recommended in the lips for the following reasons-

        • Whilst fat may last longer than filler it does not give structure. Fat is akin to two big sausages. Not a good look.
        • Fat is not as predictable as dermal fillers, with an absorption rate of 20 to over 50% in the first few months.
        • Fat in an artery is not reversible, as compared to hyaluronic acid fillers.

We use fat transfer to correct large volume deficits in more mature patients, often in combination with nano fat, adipose stems & procedures like laser resurfacing.
