Cutis Dermatology covers medical, surgical, injectable & laser treatments specifically tailored for the genetics of darker skin.

Darker skin types are prone to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or dark blemishes & spots. Pigmentation can take 5 years or longer to resolve.

Specialists use special lasers to speed up clearance by up to ten times faster. We use both the Picoway & the newest Picosure Pro lasers. In most cases we can make PIH disappear within 2- 3 sessions.

Special lasers for darker skin types

Anti-aging procedures in ethnic skin are markedly different compared to lighter skin types. Darker skin patients have more collagen, & react briskly to skin tightening procedures including Ultherapy, HIFU, threads & radiofrequency. Ethnics have an advantage with non-surgical treatments.

        FAQs

        Why Cutis Dermatology?

Our dermatologists have over 20 years of clinical expertise in the field of cosmetic dermatology. Our team covers all aspects of skin rejuvenation including treatments for ethnic & darker skin types. Most of our specialists have spent time in Asia hence we are familiar with ethnic skin.

Our portfolio of over 35 devices covers the very latest CO2, erbium, fractional lasers as well as energy devices including Tixel, RF & HIFU.

Why is it important to understand the differences between light skin & dark?

Dark vs light skin is genetically determined. These fundamental differences translate into how we heal & react to different therapies.

        Skin Type Pros  Cons  Treatments
Dark skin  Collagen more protected with pigment Post inflammatory pigmentation  Pico lasers

        Skin tightening

Light skin  Less pigmentation changes  Higher rate of collagen breakdown Fractional lasers

        Ablative lasers

Darker skin protects the dermal layer. This accounts for healthier & thicker collagen compared to lighter skin types. Collagen producing cells are also larger, more numerous & react briskly compared to lighter skin types. The upside? Better collagen production in darker skin. The downside? More keloid scars & hyperpigmentation.

        How is our equipment different?

We use specific technology to teat darker skin. Equipment & tech is vitally important in darker skin types to reduce unwanted side effects such as post treatment pigmentation. They include-

        • Pico lasers for pigmentation & skin rejuvenation
        • Special fractional lasers that have a very small spot & ultra-short pulse duration
        • Specific skin tightening devices include HIFU & radiofrequency
        • Non laser treatments such as Tixel
        • Insulated RF miconeedling devices including Infini & Genius RFM

Why is acne more severe in darker skin types?

Ethnic skin is more prone to acne. Even with mild pimples, darker skin types heal with more scarring, & universally with pigment. On this basis it is super important to manage acne early & effectively.

Dermatologists at our Brisbane clinics employ chemical peels, lasers, & medications to effectively treat acne & place it into remission

What about acne scars in darker skin?

Scarring is much more severe in darker ethnic skin, especially hypertrophic scars & post inflammatory pigmentation. Our specialist team employs procedures modified to treat acne scars in dark skin, including-

        • TCA CROSS & paint at lower concentrations
        • Fractional lasers with short pulse durations & ultra-small spots sizes
        • RF insulated microneedling devices
        • Modified subcision procedures
        • Pico lasers including Picoway & second generation Picosure for PIH

Why do we run two pico lasers not just one?

We were the first to get Picosure in 2015, fast forward to 2022 & we are the first clinic to get the Picosure Pro in Australia.

We run both Picoway & the latest Picosure Pro because each laser has optimal settings, wavelengths & delivery. Picoway is better for Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, whilst Picosure Pro is better for skin rejuvenation duties.

What skin tightening procedures do we have at Cutis?

Skin tightening can improve skin tone by contracting collagen & regenerating new collagen bundles. Unlike lighter skin types, high powered CO2 lasers cannot be used on darker skin due to the risks of post inflammatory pigmentation. On this basis we use-

        • Ultherapy: the original high intensity focused ultrasound
        • Ultraformer: another brand of HIFU
        • RF with Tempsure & Pelleve
        • RFM or radiofrequency microneedling using Genius RF

What skin tightening treatment is best?

It depends on your facial shape, concerns, anatomy & age. As a guide-

        • Mild laxity in 30s to late 40s do well with Tempsure or Pelleve
        • Mild to moderate laxity in the 40s to 50s do well with Ultherapy
        • Minimal laxity with decreased firmness does well with PDO mono threads

What is the go with anti-wrinkle injections in darker skin types?

Ethnic skin requires less anti-wrinkle units compared to lighter skin types on the scientific basis that-

        • Wrinkles are less in ethnics due to increased pigment
        • Expression based upon cultural background is less

Your specialist injector will guide you as to the location of antiwrinkle injections & the expected outcomes.

*Exception is the masseters; they require between 24-48 units each side.

Why are dermal fillers performed differently in ethnic skin?

Again, there are key anatomic features in ethics that are different compared to lighter skin types. These include wider cheekbones, but a flatter nasal bridge. Asian also have an underdeveloped maxilla, hence are flatter in the mid & medial face.

The aim of cosmetic injectables is not to efface genetic traits nor is the aim to Westernise ethnic features. Our specialists will guide you as to how we can enhance your features through skilful placement of soft tissue fillers.

How do we treat pigmentation in darker skin types?

Identifying the cause of pigmentation is the first step. Once a diagnosis is made, we can target specific treatments including-

        • Lasers for melasma, age spots & sunspots
        • Picolaser for dermal pigment
        • Picolasers for birthmarks including Ota & Café Au Lait macules
        • Lasers for post inflammatory hyperpigmentation

What are DPN or dermatosis papulosa nigra age spots?

These common spots look like skin tags but are age warts (not viral warts). DPN lesions are commonly seen in darker skin types including Indians, Middle Eastern, islander, Sri Lankan & African Americans.

Book a FREE* nurse consultation at our Brisbane clinics to determine the best treatment. T&C applies.

Treatments for DPN age warts include-

        • Lasers
        • Curettage
        • Point diathermy
        • TCA or phenol application

All treatments are aimed to reduce, not eliminate ALL DPN spots. One session will reduce 70-80% of spots.

        What are syringomas?

Syringomas are benign tumours of the skin. They are common in Asian patients. Syringomas are deep lesions, frequently around the eye area. They can be treated with laser resurfacing.

        In summary-

        • Lasers can improve most cases by up to 70-80%
        • Syringomas will recur in time 6-48 months
        • Treatments will take 1-2 weeks to heal
        • Post treatment pigment changes take 2-6 months to heal
        • Treatments are partially covered under Medicare
        • anti-wrinkle can reduce recurrence
        • Creams won’t help

        Can we lighten skin?

Yes, in most cases we can achieve 1-2 shades lighter. We use a bespoke combination of skin lightening products & the very latestest pico laser.

Our skin lightening formula contains no hydroquinone, but contains natural botanicals, liquorish, ascorbic, citric, glycolic & kojic acids. We combine this with Picoway laser. It takes 4-8 weeks to obtain skin lightening.
