RF or radiofrequency treatment is the latest procedure for enhancing skin tone. This non-ablative procedure requires little to no downtime. Using ultra-safe radiofrequency waves, RF reduces facial lines and tightens the skin, especially in the areas of the cheeks, jowls and neck.
This treatment also significantly reduces certain forms of acne scarring. RF stimulates of collagen production and improves lymphatic flow in the deeper dermal layer of your skin.
- RF is a safe method of tightening loose skin and improving skin tone
- RF can also be used to treat certain forms of acne scars
- Radiofrequency is safe for all skin types, including darker skin
- RF works via tissue retraction to cause gentle heating of dermal collagen
- Heating collagen results in the remodeling and fading of scars and facial lines
- Results are seen after 3-4 treatments
- Treatments are spaced at intervals of 3-4 weeks
- Apart from mild redness, downtime is virtually zero
RF treatments are suitable for those who have saggy skin with a loss of skin tone (skin laxity). The best areas that respond to RF include the cheeks, the areas around the eyes and the neck. This treatment can also be used as a preventive treatment for facial line development when commenced during the early stages of skin ageing.
Radiofrequency procedures are recommended for:
- Skin wrinkling, loss of skin tone
- Skin tightening on the cheeks, around the eyes and neck
- Treatment of early acne scars
RF does not improve brown spots or melasma. The treatment of brown spots, freckles, and melasma can be achieved by fractional laser or the Q-Switch laser, both of which are readily available at Cutis Clinic. Red spots or rosacea are best treated with our vascular laser.
Yes, acne scars can be treated with RF. We believe that early scar remodeling can help prevent acne scarring and effective treatment involves subablative RF; however, other types of acne scars are better treated with procedures such as TCA Cross, or fractional lasers.
We often combine RF treatments with specialist acne treatments in patients suffering from active acne, and a Clear Skin Program that will perfect the complexion once acne is no longer active.

Undesired skin conditions such as wrinkles and facial lines, poor skin tone and loss of elasticity occur below the skin’s surface. Cosmetic procedures such as laser resurfacing, fractional laser and chemical peels, therefore need to penetrate past the epidermis of the skin to positively affect the deeper dermis and so improve wrinkles, skin tone and scar visibility.
The greatest challenge has been to preserve the superficial layers of the skin when targeting the deeper layers. Subablative RF uses fractional bi-polar radio frequency to achieve this and provides maximal heating in the collagen fibres without inducing damage to the upper layer of the skin.
Collagen remodeling and increased lymphatic flow is the goal of all RF treatments. Remodeling results in a significant improvement in skin tone.
Collagen is part of the skin structure – the skin scaffolding, if you like. As we age, this scaffolding becomes week. Conditions such as acne scarring can disrupt the ordered network of collagen fibres and weaken it. Through the rejuvenation, increased production and remodeling of collagen, skin tone and the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and scars are improved.
In short, RF treatment:
- Reduces skin sagging at the cheeks, jowls, neck and around the eyes
- Reduces acne scarring
- Prevent acne scarring
- Rebuilds damaged collagen networks
- Increases collagen production
- Improves skin tone and signs of skin aging
Every RF treatment varies based on individual factors such as the extent of facial lines, current skin tone, treated area, and skin type and colour. As a guide, we recommend 4 treatments at 3-4 week intervals. Patients with darker skin will require additional RF treatments using lower energy levels to preserve even pigmentation.
Collagen remodeling is the reinstatement of the skin’s scaffolding and takes time. In the course of the next 4-6 weeks, you will notice a change your skin’s tone as the existing collagen tightens, the networks around scar tissue break down, and the skin drainage system improves. This change continues for several months after RF subablation. The best results are seen 4 months post treatment.
RF treatment is one of the least painful skin treatments and the perfect method for efficient skin rejuvenation! This treatment provides a warm, prickly sensation; at higher levels RF treatment may feel a little like nettle stings without the subsequent itch. After treatment, your skin will feel warm, like mild sunburn. For patients who have a lower tolerance to pain (please don’t feel ashamed to admit it!) we will apply a numbing gel prior to each treatment.
We fine-tune all pain management methods to suit each, individual patient.
RF is one of the safest cosmetic procedures with the least side effects and downtime.
Side effects are exceedingly rare. They include:
- Prolonged redness lasting 1-2 days (2%)
- Temporary treated skin colour changes (darker skin)
- Temporary or reversible patterning of treated skin
Yes, RF treatment is safe for all skin types, including Asian and darker skin. For darker skin types, the risk of post-inflammatory colour change is higher. To prevent this, our specialist dermatologists carefully set the RF device to emit lower energy levels and it is therefore common that those with darker skin will require 1 to 2 extra treatments.
Correct use of sunscreen and sun avoidance wherever possible is of vital importance for all of our patients.
RF treatment is not the best treatment for brown pigmentation, but our RF devices are only a small part of the broad range of skin treatments available at Cutis Clinic. We pride ourselves on our generous selection of innovative and proven, extremely safe devices and practiced techniques that provide stand-alone or combination skin rejuvenation treatments. In addition, Cutis Clinic specialist dermatologists and registered nurses are highly trained in all aspects of their work and attend regular training sessions to remain up-to-date.
Red spots including rosacea and spider veins respond best to vascular laser treatment
At Cutis Clinic, we often combine treatments to achieve the best results. In cases of brown hyperpigmentation and loss of skin tone, our specialists will probably advise a combination of RF and fractional treatments to ensure the best outcome.
The best treatment approach is the individual approach!

A course of treatments is recommended for RF treatment. Collagen stimulation and remodeling responds best over a course of 4 treatments carried out at 3-4 week intervals.

More on Fractional Laser Treatments
Radiofrequency is the new buzzword for non-invasive skin rejuvenation. This treatment focuses on the dermis – the deeper layer of skin that provides the scaffolding that supports your skin and improves skin tone. RF treatment heats up dermal collagen and wakes up the cells (fibroblasts) that produce the scaffolding fibres of skin. As a result, the skin tighten, reducing the appearance of both facial lines and scars. Unlike laser treatment, RF subablative treatment has little to no down time.
I usually like to combine RF and fractional laser treatments in one session. The logic of this is that fractional laser reduces brown spots and hyperpigmentation, while RF stimulates the production and strength of dermal collagen that results in skin tightening. As with all of my prescribed treatments, an individual approach gives the best results.
