FAQs

How to approach skin care & anti-aging in the 40s?

Chances are that your skin will require correction in the fourth to fifth decade of life.
This means approach skincare as a means of maintaining results AFTER
procedures such as chemical peels or lasers. More on that below.

Lasers will correct years of photodamage & pigmentation. Our specialists will employ one of over 35 devices to tailor a program for your skin type.

Dermal fillers are employed in this age group to enhance areas lacking in volume & projection, classic areas include the cheeks, eyes, & perioral areas (not lips but
the surrounding areas including the jawline & jowls).

What is the best skin care in the 40s?

Formulated skin care is best in more mature skin; however the basics still remain.
AM: Cleanser, antioxidants (CE, ferulic acid, resveratrol). SPF

PM: Cleanser, focused skin care based upon concerns.

 Retinol or prescription retinoids: to help reduce collagen loss & improve skin
quality.
 Pigment correctors: to reduce sun induced & hormonal hyperpigmentation.
 Anti-redness formulations: azelaic acid, niacinamide, botanicals.

What are the best procedures in the 40s?

Focus on improving your skin quality & addressing skin laxity. Skin textural
changes include sunspots, freckles, sun damage, melasma, & wrinkles. Conversely
redness & blotchiness as well as broken capillaries may be apparent with age &
conditions such as rosacea.
Skin quality can be rectified with lasers, including vascular, pigment, & fractional
hybrid resurfacing.
Skin laxity can be addressed with a combination of lasers, HIFU, RF, PDO threads
& collagen stimulating fillers. The ideal combination depends on your skin’s
chronological ageing, your ethnicity & goals.

What areas are treated with dermal fillers in the 40s?

Almost universally, patients in the 40s are candidates for dermal fillers. Fillers
replace loss volume from collagen, fat, & bone depletion. Commonly treated areas
are-

 Cheeks: 1-2 ml total
 Jawline: 1- 5 ml total
 Eye area: 0.5 to 1 ml total
 Jowls & marionette lines: 0.5 to 1.5 ml total
We are experts in both hyaluronic acid fillers & collagen stimulating dermal
fillers (last longer but take longer to work).

How are anti-wrinkle injections different in the 40s?

In this age group, anti-wrinkle injections are more complex- less around the eyes
(as the muscle holds up your cheek), & less forehead anti-wrinkle, as this holds up your
eyebrows.
Performed with skill & precision, our injectors can reduce wrinkles whilst still giving
you a natural look. Book a free assessment with our nurse injectors to discuss. *T&C

Is skin tightening necessary in the 40s?

Unless you have extraordinary genetics, most people will benefit from skin
tightening. Collagen starts to degrade in your mid 20s. By your late 40’s your
collagen has depleted by 40%.
Skin tightening in this age group can be achieved with radiofrequency, high
intensity ultrasound & or PDO threads. For mild laxity RF can be useful, whilst
HIFU or Ultherapy can be used if you have more severe laxity. The ideal program
depends on your skin type, downtime, skin thickness, ethnicity, goals, & degree of laxity.

What does a cost-effective skin treatment program in the 40s look like?

A simple, but effective program extends over 12 months, tying in skincare,
injectables & procedures may look like this-

 Skin Care: Antioxidants, retinol, AHAs
 Injectables: 2-3 mls dermal filler, anti-wrinkle injections 1-3 times a year.
 Lasers: 1 session of Hybrid fractional laser resurfacing (last 3-5 years)
 Skin tightening: HIFU or RF (Tempure, Pelleve, Thermage, NuEra) 1-3
sessions.

Are surgical procedures common in the 40s?

Face lifting is extraordinarily rare in the 40s, unless patients exhibit a marked
amount of lower & mid face laxity. Remember, a face lift repositions skin, fat, & in
some cases muscle. It does not address volume changes or skin quality.
Surgical blepharoplasty +/- brow lifting can be considered in some. Our surgical
dermatologists have over 12 years of experience in upper eyelid blepharoplasty.
Endoscopic brow lifting is performed by oculoplastic.
